How To Style a Fishtail Braid

How To Style a Fishtail Braid
Steps :
1. Backcomb/tease the crown of your head. This makes the hair “sticky” for starting the fishtail.
2. Gather a small handful of hair from the back center of the head and separate the hair into two sections.
3. + 4. Take a small strand of hair from the right section, pull it back and cross it over to join the left hair section.
5. + 6. Take a small strand of hair from the left section, pull it back and cross it over to join the right hair section.
7. Repeat these steps all the way down the back of the head. Continue throughout the “tail”.
8. Secure with hair tie. Fishtails looks beautiful a little disheveled. To achieve this look gently pull apart/loosen the braid. It’s ok if it’s uneven or little pieces falls out. Gives the fishtail a youthful, messy ease.

How To Make a Fishtail Braid

How To :
  • 1 : Gather your hair to one side in a low ponytail, securing it close to the base of your neck with a clear elastic.
  • 2 : Next, create a fishtail braid: Separate the ponytail into two sections.
  • 3 : Hold one section; with your other hand, take a narrow strip of hair from the outside of the other section and bring it over to the one in your hand.
  • 4 : Repeat, incorporating hair from one section into the other until you run out of hair; then secure with another clear elastic.
  • 5 : Finally, with a pair of scissors, carefully cut out the top elastic to give the braid a loose, casual look.
  • 6 : For a more bohemian effect, gently pull the braid apart with your fingers.

How To Make The Pull-Back Fishtail Braid

Steps :
  • 1 : Part your hair either down the middle or on the side you normally part on, and fishtail braid a front small section of your hair. I have a step-by-tutorial on how to fishtail here if you don't know how. It's really really easy so don't get scared away!
  • 2 : Braid to the end of your section of hair, and wrap it around your head to place a bobby pin in the back. Do the same thing now to the opposite side of your hair, and have the two braids meet in the back.
  • 3 : If you have long hair, it will look a little messy where the braids meet because you'll have extra hair that was too long. Tuck those strands underneath the braid so that you can't see them anymore.
  • 4 : Put a bow over where the braids meet in the middle and you're all finished!

How to do a fishtail braid

Fishtail braids look harder than normal braids, but if you think of them as two ponytails it’s really simple to do.
Steps :

1. Put your hair in a ponytail. Once you’re more practiced, you can skip this step, but it’s a must to keep this braid in place, especially if you have layers cut in your hair.
2. Split your ponytail in two. Hold one side in each hand and keep these separate as you braid.
3. Cross a small section from the left to the right. Take a small piece of hair from the left side of the left ponytail and put it in the right ponytail.
4. Repeat on the right. Take a small piece of hair from the right side of the right ponytail and put it in the left ponytail.
5. Repeat this process all the way down the ponytails. Each time, cross a small piece of hair from one ponytail to the other side. As you move down the ponytail they cross over, forming the fishtail braid.
6. Tie the end and stretch it out. Secure the end of your fishtail braid with a small, clear elastic. Gently pull at the sides of the braid to stretch it out. This makes your hair look thicker and fuller, and emphasizes the shape of the braid.
